When you think of Holland, tulips, clogs, and windmills probably are a few items that come to mind. Well Zaanse Schans is an adorable little Dutch Windmill Village with beautiful and natural scenery and a clog workshop to boast! You can walk along the charming paths of quaint cottages and walk right up to all of the windmills, crossing bridges along your way. It’s ideal for a few hours on a half-day trip from Amsterdam!
Things to See and Do:
Windmills - "In the Zaan region, Western Europe’s oldest industrial area, there used to be more than 600 windmills running at the same time. At Zaanse Schans, just outside Amsterdam, ten pairs of sail continue to turn. Visiting such a great wooden machine as it slogs away is an impressive spectacle. The mills are used for sawing wood and grinding oil, flower, spices and colourings."
Craft Workshops - "At Zaanse Schans, exciting demonstrations will acquaint you with all kinds of traditional Dutch crafts. Almost all of the demonstrations are free of charge and spread across the entire site. Expert crafts people demonstrate their skills in a variety of techniques, ranging from woodworking and food production to the crafts that form the basis for countless souvenirs. All of them have stories to tell that go back centuries. Experience a rich product history coming to life at the heart of Western Europe’s oldest industrial area and yet a stone’s throw away from the many sights of Amsterdam."
