J'Adore Explore City Guide - White Sands, New Mexico
August 3, 2015
White Sands National Monument is a gorgeous natural wonder that is a definite must if you are anywhere near Alamagordo, New Mexico. This National Monument boasts 275 square miles of beautiful white sand dunes comprised of gypsum crystals and is the largest gypsum dune field in the world. The sand is super fine, soft, and cool on your feet, no matter how warm the weather. The dunes make perfect slopes to take disks to the top and slide down! There are places to grill and plenty of space for different activities, such as sunset strolls, full moon bike rides, and more! Keep a lookout for natural wildlife like the bleached earless lizard (picture below). This site is perfect for a romantic date, a fun friends/family get together, and is great for kids!
Things to Bring:
Sunscreen and Sunglasses - The white sand is very reflective, so even if you don't feel like you need sun protection, definitely use it! Your eyes and skin will thank you later!
Cooler and Water - There is no water out on the dunes, so be sure to bring plenty of drinks and snacks! Have you tried a Yeti Rambler? It's 30 oz. stainless steel tumbler cup and it keeps ice frozen all day long (even if you leave it in your car or out in the sun).
Towels - Just to brush the sand off or put down in the car.
Disks and Wax for Sliding - You can buy these at the gift shop
Camera - So many gorgeous photo ops!
Toys - Footballs, Pro Kadima, games for catch or sand box toys just for fun
Umbrella and Lounge Chairs - For comfortable lounging
Cash - Park Entrance is $3/person
How to Get Here:
By Car - Closest Major Airport is in El Paso, TX
Things to Consider:
While walking the dunes, it's easy to get lost as everything looks relatively the same. There is no cell service, so be sure not to wander too far from your vehicle unless you know how to get back!
Dress in Layers - It is a desert, so it can get really hot and really cool - dress comfortably
