Margaux - One Month Birthday

One month! One full month! It has simultaneously felt so much shorter and longer all at the same time. I'm a couple of weeks late in posting this, but such is life with a newborn. The first month was filled with lots of love and cuddles and visitors!

She loves looking at the ceiling fan and lights and high contrast images, making funny faces, snuggling with daddy, being warm, being held on her side, having her arms by her face, and standing when being held.

She doesn't like having dirty diapers (she goes from 0-60mph with a rage scream the second she has a dirty diaper), waiting for food, pacifiers, tummy time, hiccups, and naps in the day.

Some of my favorite things is that she smiles and giggles in her sleep and it's the cutest thing in the world! She is great at planks, and is pretty strong. She makes awesome pterodactyl noises. She recognized our voices in the hospital and would stop crying if we talked to her, which was magical!

Physically:

She was born 9lbs2oz, and went down to 8lbs4oz when we were released from the hospital, which is considered normal. By 5 days she was 8lbs7oz, 11 days 8lbs12oz, and by 18 days 9lbs6oz. At birth she was in the 99th percentile for head size, 97th percentile for weight, and 71st percentile for height. She has big, beautiful blue eyes. They started off dark blue and by the third week had developed a light blue inner ring with a dark blue outer ring. Her eyelashes went from non-existent the first day to super long by the end of the month (just like Daddy's). She follows objects well with her eyes, and can almost roll over.

Feeding:

We fed on-demand the first one to two weeks and at least every 3 hours on a 3:00/6:00/9:00/12:00 schedule until she gained back her birth weight and was on a good weight trajectory. At her 2 week appointment her pediatrician told us we didn't need to wake her up to eat anymore, so we let her establish her routine. She was almost like clockwork wanting to eat every 3 hours during the day (maybe because we had done that the first 2 weeks), but she almost immediately went to 4-6 hour stretches at night (Praise the Lord for sleep!). She eats really well and very efficiently and has gained weight well. We've tried a couple of bottles of breastmilk starting after the 3rd week, but she sees bottles as more of a starter course than a substitute for nursing, so we haven't pushed bottles too hard.

Sleeping:

The very first night I'm sure she would have slept straight through - she was so sleepy, but the nurses kept coming in every hour to poke her foot and take her temperature, so it's hard to really say. When she got home her sleep schedule matched her feeding schedule. By the third week she decided she wasn't a fan of naps and wanted to be entertained in the day. She was waking once in the night by the third week. She breaks out of normal swaddles, so we do a super swaddle with her arms, to keep the startle reflex a little more under control.
